Charlotte Narratives

The Charlotte Narrative and Conversation Collection contains narratives, conversations and interviews in English and other languages representative of the residents of Mecklenburg County, NC and surrounding communities. Unlike the other collections in New South Voices, which are oral histories, the recordings and transcripts in this collection are to provide a resource for linguistic analysis. The subject matter of the conversations is not necessarily related to Charlotte or the region. Students of Professor Boyd Davis (Department of English, UNC Charlotte) began recording oral narratives and conversations with native and non-native speakers of English in 1998; UNC Charlotte faculty in the Department of English and the College of Education contributed student-collected narratives to the collection over several years. The project was expanded by Project MORE, a teacher-training initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.
